29" Sega Replacement Tri-Synch Monitor CGA/EGA/VGA
(DSD-2931-T-S)
This is a DSD2931T-S-R monitor Open Frame Industrial Tri-synch VGA monitor assembly. The unit is auto voltage adjusting between 110VAC and 220/240VAC.
The coding for the DSD monitors is as follows:
DSD (size of screen)(Max Resolution)(Type Suffix) - (Frame) - (Tube Use)
In this case....
Size of screen is 29" or more specifically 68cms (as per the actual tube size reference from the rear of the tube)
Max Resolution is 31kHz or 640x480
T = Tri-synch - in this case 15kHz (standard res), 24.5 kHz (medium res) and 31kHz (hi res) are all automatically supported and are auto switching at power up.
Frame - Sega Universal Monitor Frame Mount - this size is suitable for 90 degree rotation as per Candy Cabinets and driving games of Sega manufacture
Tube Use - New - so this is a brand new grade A Orion-manufactured tube. Points to note are.... as it is brand new there are absolutely zero marks on the picture face - the original deflection Yoke has been removed and replaced with one compatible with the MS9-29 and PM1745 monitors, so that this tube can correctly display the images. Once the replacement coil is fitted, the colour purity, static convergence and dynamic convergence have to be manually adjusted (no magic computers to do the job) and then everything reset in place and glued in with wedges. The curvature on these tubes (and they are to the best of my belief, the only curved 29" tubes on the planet) is slightly less than that of the original Toshiba tubes fitted to MS9s - this means that there is about a 4-5mm gap using a standard MS9 bezel, at the midpoint of the horizontal and vertical axis of the bezel. I have these in New Astros and it is not an issue at all and some black foam tape removes any gap at all (but as everyone knows I always give the full details on machines and monitors). Final point is.. due to the slight difference in face curvature, you get about one pixel of red line at the top of the image where the convergence cannot be corrected fully - only really visible when you are looking for it specifically and in the white grid test screens. I have put up images of the colour purity tests to show no patches of colour distortion (the horizontal bar on the green is from camera imaging)
This unit is perfect for retrofitting older video game cabinets with a replacement CGA-VGA monitor and is perfect for mame conversions on 29" or to convert your 29" CGA/EGA cabinet to a new standard to handle the higher res games that are manufactured today - eg convert your Astro City cab to get the full graphical quality of Naomi, Namco and Taito systems that use up to 640x480 display modes. For MAME applications, you can use this monitor without the need for an expensive low-res video card - it will simply be a case of plugging the VGA lead (included) into your PC with a matching graphics mode set, and that's it.
In addition, this monitor can be used to replace faulty (or missing) monitors in your sega model 2, model 3 and Naomi driving games that use the stanard 29" tube size.
The assembly has been re-wired to conform to the Sega standard 15 pin monitor connections for power and CGA/EGA modes, and the VGA signal is supplied by a standard 15 pin Sub D connector as per a normal VGA lead. VGA leads are available as extra items in 1.5m and 3.0m lengths. The VGA connector can also be used to supply CGA and EGA frequency signals, but the external power must also be connected via the main 15 pin Sega connector
Adjustments and settings are controlled via a remote PCB with controls as shown and a switch is also provided to switch between 0.7V signals and 5V signals - ie using the VGA connector or not
This particular monitor assembly has been built with a brand new chassis kit and fully tested by myself - screen images are shown in the photographs of this actual monitor in use.
Please do not try live switching of resolution modes - this will always reduce the life of a multisynch monitor and they were not designed for that purpose - if you are using mame with a pc then I would strongly recommend using the PC in 640x480 at 60Hz (which can be accessed via the advanced setup on your graphics adapter tab) and generate scanlines via mame. If you start running on VGA at boot and then force the monitor back down to CGA to play a game, then back up to VGA for the menu etc you run the risk of damaging your monitor, and almost certainly will reduce its life expectancy - these are the very last that will ever be available - look after them

NOTE - THIS MONITOR MUST BE CONNECTED TO THE GAME EARTH VIA THE EARTH WIRE LUG ON THE MONITOR FRAME FOR SAFE OPERATION!!!
My CRT safety manual and operation instructions are also included with the package
